課程簡介、目標

This course is an introduction to industrial organization. The main purpose of this course is to understand firm behavior.

The course starts with the extreme case of monopoly. We are particularly interested in pricing strategies and welfare implications. We also ask, how the state can regulate monopolies to increase welfare. Then we consider markets with a small number of firms.

Each firm has to take the behavior of its rivals into account in order to derive its optimal business strategy. We start with the two basic models of oligopoly developed by Cournot and Bertrand.

We will address the role of dynamic collusion, product differentiation, capacity constraints, information asymmetries, commitment etc.
